22nd Annual Dunfey ‘Portals’ Exhibition at the NH Art Association

PORTSMOUTH – “Portals” is the theme of Joan L. Dunfey’s 22nd Annual Exhibition, which will be presented in November at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery of the New Hampshire Art Association.

Portals are transformative. Memories are portals to the past – doors and thresholds to another reality. NHAA members and non-members were invited to participate in the jury process.

With 78 works chosen from 153 submissions, this exhibition is one of the NHAA’s most prestigious exhibitions of the year and is held annually in honor of Joan L. Dunfey, New Hampshire Seacoast resident and steadfast patron of the arts.

“One Door Two Windows”, a photograph by Robert Morin, will be part of the "Portals" exhibit at the NHAA gallery in Portsmouth.

This year’s juror is Mary Harding, a 1975 graduate of Brown University, who has always been passionate about the art. After graduation, she was an exhibition designer for the Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth and for the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, New York. She was director of the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit, Maine for four years.

Since 1990, she has been an independent art consultant specializing in regional contemporary art. Harding curated contemporary art exhibitions for the George Marshall Store Gallery, owned by the Old York Historical Society from 1996 to 2020.

At present, she has continued to visit artist studios, galleries and other places and share where she goes and what she sees through the occasional newsletters that are posted on her site. Web at

An awards ceremony will take place on Friday, November 5, at 6 p.m., during the opening reception. Prizes include: 1st place – $ 800; 2nd place – $ 500; and 3rd Place – $ 300, each generously donated by the “Joan L. Dunfey Fund for the Arts” through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, which supports this annual exhibition. Honorable mentions will also be selected.

Visitors to the gallery are currently advised to wear a mask due to the prevalence of COVID-19. However, if visitors are more comfortable making a time to view the exhibit by appointment outside of gallery hours, they can call 603-431-4230.
