Veteran anime art director and supervisor Shichirou Kobayashi died aged 89 from congestive heart failure. His death occurred on August 25, 2022 and the announcement of his death was made public on September 9, 2022.
Born on August 30, 1932, Kobayashi got his start as an art teacher in an elementary school before joining the animation studio. Toei Douga (now known as Toei-Animation) in 1964. After a few years, he created his own studio, Kobayashi-productionin 1968 and served as a representative director until it closed in February 2011. He retired and left the animation industry soon after.
Kobayashi has served as art director for many top anime series and movies, including Lupine III: The Castle of Cagliostro, Golgo 13, Space Adventure Cobra (1982), Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, angel egg, Nodame Cantabile, Revolutionary Girl Utenaand many other projects.
His most recent contributions include art direction for Kaichou wa Maid-Sama!, Detroit Metal City, Nabari no Ou, Aoi Hana, and Tantei Opera Milky Holmes.
Shichirou Kobayashi was also the subject of the 17th episode of the French toco toco documentary series. In the video, he talks about his childhood inspirations for his art style, as well as how he expresses his creativity.
Kobayashi also received the Nihon Anime Taishou Award in the Art Category in 1986 and the Tokyo International Anime Fair Merit Award in 2009. He also received the Film Merit Award from the Japanese Government Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2011 .
Meanwhile, many fans of Kobayashi’s work expressed their condolences and paid tribute on Twitter.
