Club Digest: Sumter Art Association

The Sumter Art Association met on Tuesday, December 7 in the parish hall of the Church of the Holy Comforter. President Carla Young welcomed 49 members, with a special welcome to new member Laurie James.

Members’ guests were warmly received. They were Bonnie Disney and Dee Mitchum, guests of Carla Young; Suzanne Wates, guest of Debbie Thomas; Mary Smith, guest of Ginger Barwick and Ann Snead; Joni Brown, guest of Sarah Tindal; Burgess Alessandro, guest of Patti Sosnowski; Nancy Ellen Thompson, guest of Bunni Russell; Dawn Oryszak, guest of Kathy Ardis; and Becky Wilson and Deanna Hatton, guests of Becky Pritchard. A very special guest for the afternoon was little Gwen Bettinger, daughter of program participant Jessica Bettinger.

Chaplain Josie Holler presented “Mary’s Song”, a meditation based on the Magnificat, the prayer of the Virgin Mary in the Gospel of Luke. She concluded with a prayer.

Vicki Goodwin announced a number of cultural events currently taking place locally during the Christmas season.

Program Chair Debbie Thomas presented “Jessica and the Boys,” a talented brass quintet from the Sumter Community Band. The musicians were Thomas Langford and Rick Mitchum, trumpets; Tim Wilson, French horn; Jessica Bettinger, trombone; and John Wates, tuba. They performed a number of compositions appropriate for the Christmas season, ranging from baroque to contemporary. Their delightful performance ended with the “Hallelujah Chorus” of Handel’s “Messiah”.



After the program, members and guests were invited to the tea table to enjoy refreshments provided by the hostess committee. The president was Marie Hill. Kathy Creech was co-chair. They were assisted by Emily Boykin, Rosemary Drakeford, Caron DuRant, Maryanne Harvin, Karen Ingram, Virginia Anne McLaurin, Marie Penn, Becky Pritchard and Ann Snead.

Marie Hill provided the centerpiece of the table.
