Demetrious Johnson backs Aljamain Sterling’s criticism: “Don’t believe in karma”

Demetrious Johnson doesn’t believe in karma, Aljamain Sterling.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight champion Sterling has suggested that Demetrious Johnson’s recent technical KO (TKO) loss via the knee (see here) to Adriano Moraes was due to karma. Sterling’s comment comes after Johnson argued a rule change was needed after Sterling’s attempts to stall led to a disqualification (look at the illegal knee) win over Petr Yan at UFC 259.

“I don’t think it’s karma. I think if I hadn’t said anything, to begin with, I think the same thing probably would have happened again. The most important thing is that I am always very impartial, ”Johnson told MMAMania.com. “I love Aljamain Sterling. I think he’s a great athlete, a great fighter. When I sat there and watched this fight, I’m like – and he can probably attest to that too – any wrestling trainer, when you’re pinned or stacked or something like that, they’ll say, ‘ You shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

“So when I watched this fight, Aljamain Sterling is such a gifted athlete and he’s so skilled. But it’s like, why would you want to put yourself there in the first place? He said: ‘I felt I was in a safe place.’ If I trained him I would say, ‘Dog, we don’t count on you to be here for a safe place. You get up, you pull the guard, you have a good grappling. Let’s go elsewhere. Certainly homeboy f-king Petr Yan gave him a knee, right? “

Johnson, whose loss to the ONE Championship Flyweight title was a knee to an opponent on the ground, says he lives by the criticisms he preaches.

“All my words come from my coach. He always said that, ”said the former UFC Flyweight champion. “There are times in the fights that I’ve fought, like John Dodson, where they’ve done the exact same thing. He put his hands on the ground the first time we fought and I couldn’t knee him in the face. And he did it on purpose. My trainer said how is that even a fight? If a person puts their hands on the ground and stops the momentum of the fight, it doesn’t make sense to me.

“That’s why I said what I said. Aljamain Sterling was on his knees and he stopped the progress of the fight. Petr Yan must have stopped and thought about the next move he was going to throw. This is where it comes from. Let him say it was karma – I don’t believe in karma. I’m a good person, I feel like … If he does it again, I’ll repeat the same thing.

Johnson will fight reigning ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon in a Special Rules bout at ONE X on December 5. The first and three rounds will be played according to ONE Muay Thai rules; Meanwhile, rounds two and four will be run under ONE Championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) rules.
