The Fort Myers Beach Art Association will celebrate 54 years since the grand opening of their gallery on Shell Mound Boulevard took place in February 1968. The organization, whose first minutes date back 51, will celebrate another year on the island as the one of its oldest members with an open day on Thursday 3 March.

The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the gallery located at 3030 Shell Mound Blvd., off Donora Blvd. The open house will feature demonstrations by local artists, refreshments including a birthday cake and the sale of mini masters – original works of art for just $10. Demos will include watercolors, collages, water-based media on Yupo paper, portraits, pastels, oil and acrylic paint, and mixed media.

Admission is free for the public.

The art association has come a long way since 1951, when its meetings, art shows and fundraising events were held in a member-built chicken shack, said Pam Flaherty, president of publicity of the Fort Myers Beach Art Association.

The Fort Myers Beach Art Association had two other temporary homes until 1965 when land was purchased in the middle of the island on Donora Blvd.

Dedication ceremonies were held on February 22, 1968, and President Mira Sackrison used it “gold spade” to symbolize the start of the first cultural center on the beach. The skylights and storage room were added in 1978. In 1984 the building was improved by providing a ramp and modified restrooms to provide an art experience for walkers and wheelchair users. This project also provided a second gallery.

Works by Jeanne Raimondi are on display at Shucker’s Galleria this month.
