GETTING TO KNOW YOURSELF: Lindsey Gerhard, Artistic Director, Jansen Art Center | Community

LYNDEN — As Artistic Director of the Jansen Art Center, Lindsey Gerhard’s primary duty is to “support the programming of all of our talented art studios and develop new community-focused programs to help the J fulfill our mission to create opportunities for the community to engage in the arts”.

Although Gerhard has been at the Jansen Art Center for nearly a year, she has spent the past 10 years working with arts organizations and nonprofits in Whatcom County.

Before working at the J, Gerhard worked for several years at the Pickford Film Center in Bellingham.

What does she like most about her job?

“I love how art has so many facets,” Gerhard said recently. “There are so many different ways to get involved and experience art at J, from music to ceramics to exhibitions, it’s always fresh and ever-changing. Such a bright and vibrant environment.

Growing up, Gerhard wanted to be a veterinarian.

“I loved James Herriot’s books when I was a kid,” she said.

Lynden Grandstand: What is your favorite activity when you are not working?

Lindsey Gerhard: You can find me roller-skating around Zuanich Park in the summer, and with the Bellingham Roller Betties as my Fleetwood Smack alter ego.

Grandstand: What is your least favorite household chore?

Gerard: Dishes. Although I’m grateful to have food to prepare and people to cook and eat with, I can’t stand to do the dishes.

Grandstand: What is your favorite food?

Grandstand: What music do you have in your vehicle right now?

Gerard: Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska.

Grandstand: What is your favorite sports team?

Gerard: Bellingham Roller Betties, of course!

Grandstand: What’s the most important thing on your to-do list?

Gerard: I would like to have a thriving garden full of edible crops and flowers, attracting bees and birds of all kinds. Every year I get a little closer.
