Kory Kennedy, new American artistic director of chess

US Chess is pleased to announce the hiring of Kory Kennedy as Artistic Director in our Communications Department. Her start date is March 31, 2021. Kory will report directly to Chess Life / Online Chess Life editor-in-chief John Hartmann.

Kory lives in Pennsylvania and brings with him extensive experience from leading magazine industry publications to Life in chess and our other publications. He also has significant experience in the digital world. Please see his portfolio on for samples of his impressive work. It will undoubtedly take our already high standards to a new level. “

Kory grew up playing chess with his father and now plays with his youngest son. Besides the competitive and intimate aspects of the game, Kory is drawn to the visual aspects of chess. He was drawn to the various designs of the rooms, from the simplest to the most complex, as well as the variety of boards available.

Kory has a long history in the design industry, having worked for publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Runner’s World, Sports Illustrated, and Rolling stone. He holds a BFA in Design Communication from the Parsons School of Design in New York.

Outside of work, Kory enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons and two cats (Vincent and Jules). He practices transcendental meditation, kickboxing and Muay Thai, and enjoys reading graphic novels and collecting all things pop culture.
