Marketing and Communication Manager – Employment

Australian Theater for Young People (ATYP) is the national theater company for young people. We exist to connect young people with the professional theater industry at local, regional and national levels. This is the principle on which the company was founded in 1963. It is what drives us today.

The Australian Theater for Young People specializes in integrating professional theater practice into the process of supporting youth theater. We enjoy working with all levels of the arts industry, from the most famous national companies to the smallest youth theaters. Our work supports young people from their first theatrical experience to their first professional production.

In 2022, ATYP will move to its permanent home in the arts district of Walsh Bay. The specially designed 196-seat theater, named in honor of ATYP alumnus Rebel Wilson, will offer a fully professional subscription season. A first for the theater of young people in the world.

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for establishing and maintaining good communication and working relationships with the staff, board and management of ATYP. They oversee the work of the Digital Marketing and Communications Manager, Digital Engagement Designer, and Art Director.


The Director of Marketing and Communications is required to maintain effective working relationships with:

  • Major vendors and marketing partners including ad and advertising agencies, printers, web developers, designers, artists, illustrators, distribution companies, courier companies, photographers, and the media.

  • Artistic, production and room staff.

  • Arts companies, industry lobby, member groups and other key partner organizations

  • Young people involved in ATYP programs.


Marketing and promotion

  • Develop, oversee and deliver a comprehensive marketing plan including goals, strategies, volumes, schedules, review dates and reporting systems for all business activities.

  • Develop, monitor and consistently deliver ATYP’s annual marketing activities, online, advertising, promotion and branding; including managing and coordinating the delivery of the design, printing and distribution of all marketing materials according to established annual schedules.

  • Attend and participate in opening nights, media launches and other marketing / advertising events and generally act as an Ambassador of ATYP.



  • Supervise the writing, updating and editing of the copy; and image sources for all company marketing materials including press releases / press kits, advertising, programs, posters / flyers, newsletters / email letters, other forums external or information about ATYP may appear.

  • Ensuring that corporate marketing and communications materials, including the ATYP website, are delivered, maintained and updated in a consistent and accurate manner.

  • Develop and supervise the digital presence of ATYP in collaboration with the management team.

  • Ensure stocks of relevant ATYP promotional and corporate materials are maintained.

  • Oversee the Digital Marketing and Communications Manager in maintaining ATYP’s presence and good reputation on social media.

In line

  • Oversee the maintenance of ATYP’s website and social media channels.

  • Manage the development and supervise the maintenance by the Digital Engagement Designer of the On Demand and On Demand Plus platforms of ATYP in collaboration with the Web developer Studio Jack.

Research, development and planning

  • Effectively plan key annual deadlines, assist Director of Strategic Initiatives in annual budgeting for marketing activities, ensure timely briefing of key vendors and obtain quotes within allocated budgets.

  • Ensure consistent collection of marketing data and feedback on all ATYPs Activities.

  • Keep abreast of marketing and advertising trends and identify new opportunities for ATYP.

  • In consultation with the management team, regularly review the profile, programs, events, products and initiatives of ATYP from a marketing perspective and provide advice for their development.

Documentation and assessment

  • Manage and supervise the documentation of all ATYPs productions, workshops and events for archival and promotional purposes.

  • Organize regular and rigorous evaluation of marketing strategies and activities throughout the company and develop mechanisms to effectively collect quantitative and qualitative information on the effectiveness of all marketing, advertising and promotion activities .

  • Assist in reporting to funding agencies, sponsors and other stakeholders as requested.


  • Oversee the maintenance of the marketing and customer database, including staff training.

  • Manage and coordinate opening nights, media launches and other marketing / advertising events, including compilation of invitation lists, distribution of invitations and receipt of RSVPs.

  • Manage marketing expenses within budget parameters set by the leadership team.

  • Ensure that multiple copies of marketing materials are kept in ATYP’s archives and retained for use in acquittals, reports and proposals to key stakeholders.

  • Provide regular reports to the management team and board of directors as requested.

Other responsibilities

  • Attend staff and other meetings upon request.

  • Ensure compliance with ATYP’s WH&S policy at all times.

  • Other duties assigned by the Director of Strategic Initiatives.

Essential criteria:

  • A creative thinker with a minimum of four years of experience in a senior marketing role

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing strategic marketing plans in line with company objectives

  • Demonstrated experience in the coordination, management and delivery of print and electronic marketing materials

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective communication strategies for social media

  • Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of advertising campaigns

  • Excellent administration and project management skills including the ability to work under pressure and effectively prioritize different work requests to meet competing deadlines

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to draft and edit marketing and advertising copy

  • Excellent computer skills including extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and experience working with databases

  • Desirable criteria:

    • Experience working with publishing software
    • Experience creating video content
    • Knowledge of the arts industry nationally and internationally
    • Current driver’s license
