Clark Mitchell, an award-winning pastellist in California, will judge the Redwood Art Association’s 62nd “Fall Exhibition”, which will be shown online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I was to do an outdoor painting workshop on the weekends when the exhibition was to be judged and, when invited, I was happy to add a day to my visit to Eureka,” said Mitchell, who resides in Cotati. “I have been so impressed with the high quality of member artwork posted on the website and on social media that I look forward to this task, although it now has to be virtual rather than in person. “
Mitchell – who holds an art degree from Colorado College and attended the Bay Area Academy of Art University – has been named a “master pastellist” by the Pastel Society of America and “distinguished pastellist” by the Pastel Society of the West Coast. He was recently awarded “Signature Member” status with the Laguna Plein Air Painters of America.
“Master Pastellist and Distinguished Pastellist are designations I can add after signing for winning a number of awards within a specified time frame in this organization’s exhibitions,” said Mitchell, who owns the oil paintings. and pastel included in art collections around the world.
It also appeared on the cover of the June 2011 Pastel Journal magazine and was included in the 2012 book “California Light, A Century of Landscapes” by Jean Stern and Molly Siple, among other publications.
Online entry information for the RAA Fall Exhibition is available at www.redwoodart.us. The exhibition, which includes prizes, is open to all members of the Redwood Art Association.
Mitchell says that as a judge of the show, he will examine the artists’ expertise in handling their chosen medium – be it painting, pastel, photography, printmaking, sculpture or jewelry. He says he’s also looking for originality, “a new way of approaching the subject or handling the materials involved” and “that ‘wow!’ factor when you first see a creation.
Registrations for the RAA exhibition will be accepted from Saturday. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. on August 22. The exhibition will open online on August 26 and can be viewed on the RAA website – www.redwoodart.us.
