Pokemon Sword and Shield art director leaves to form new indie studio

Veteran Pokemon designer James Turner left Game Freak and formed a new independent studio called All Possible Futures.

Turner, who served as art director for Pokemon Sword and Shield in 2019, took to Twitter to share news of his new indie studio. Turner will be joined at All Possible Futures by Swords of Ditto and Stealth Inc. developer Jonathan Biddle. The duo said on Twitter that their first game will be revealed in an “awesome trailer” very soon.

Turner’s departure from Game Freak is notable because, in addition to being the art director for Pokemon Sword and Shield, he is also the first westerner to design Pokemon, starting with Pokemon Black and White in 2010. Prior to that, he has worked on Pokemon Colosseum in 2003, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness in 2005, and Pokemon Battle Revolution in 2006 in various capacities, including art director. In total, he created over 20 Pokémon, including Shadow Lugia, Buzzwole, and Guzzlord.

As for Turner’s sequel, we’ll have to wait for that “awesome trailer” he promised. There’s not much to take from the teaser of the ad, except that the game seems to have something to do with a cat wearing clothes and…swords? There’s a “crossed swords” emoji in the tweet above next to “first game” and the cat art also features a small cartoon sword. Otherwise, the first game of All Possible Futures is a complete mystery.
