MONTCLAIR, NJ — For the first time, Studio Montclair presents an exhibition of works by 34 artists who participated in the popular initiative of the Studio Montclair Critics Group. It will be exhibited from June 11 to July 15 at Studio Montclair Gallery, 127 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair. A vernissage will take place on Saturday, June 11 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibition highlights an ongoing and successful critical group program that was founded by SMI years ago and has grown to encompass many groups of artists working in a variety of artistic mediums. Artists have typically met monthly in person — or in walk-in zoom sessions since the pandemic began. The participating artists are both novices and professionals.

“It’s a supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to share their work,” said photographer Amy Becker. “Comments help me get out of my head and gain a new perspective on my photography. I find the group’s collective input enriching and very helpful on what works and doesn’t work with my images. I also find it rewarding to hearing others talk about their own work and process and then discussing it with the group. When I reflect on the five years of our group’s existence, I have been struck by the variety, quality and growth of our members In the meantime, I look forward to the day when we can safely meet again at each other’s homes, where we can share impressions and thoughts about our work in person.

“I always work alone in the studio. I find that getting together with other artists to discuss our work is very beneficial,” said painter Denis Orloff. “The friendliness is excellent. We have developed a relationship of trust between our members and the critical groups allow us to discuss so many topics. We share techniques, ideas and professional advice. I always look forward to sharing my latest work. Being a member also pushes you to keep producing art so you always have something new to show.
