Montclair, NJ – Studio Montclair presents the first-ever exhibition of works by 34 artists who participated in the grassroots initiative of the Studio Montclair Critics Group. It will be on display from June 11 to July 15 at Studio Montclair Gallery, 127 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, NJ. A vernissage will take place on Saturday, June 11 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Fernando Mariscal, “Brookdale Park” – Oil painting

The exhibition highlights a highly successful ongoing critical group program that was founded by SMI years ago and has grown to encompass many groups of artists working in a variety of artistic mediums. Artists usually meet monthly in person (or in walk-in zoom sessions since the start of the Covid pandemic). Participating artists, who include novices as well as professionals, say they are very pleased with the camaraderie and helpful feedback provided by group members.

According to photographer Amy Becker, “It’s a supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to share their work. Comments help me get out of my own head and gain a new perspective on my photography. I find the collective contribution of the group enriching and very useful on what works and does not work with my images. I also find it rewarding to hear others talk about their own work and process, and then discuss it with the group. When I reflect on the five years of our group’s existence, I have been struck by the variety, quality and growth of our members. In the meantime, I look forward to the day when we can safely meet again at each other’s homes, where we can share impressions and thoughts about our work in person.

According to painter Denis Orloff, “I always work alone in the studio. I find getting together with other artists to discuss our work is very beneficial. The camaraderie is great. We have developed a relationship of trust between our members and the Crit groups allow us to address so many subjects. We share techniques, ideas and professional advice. I always look forward to sharing my latest work. Being a member also pushes you to keep producing art so you always have something new to show.
