Waterford’s Theater Royal artistic director bids farewell after 14 years

The artistic director of Waterford’s Theater Royal has bid farewell after fourteen years.

Ben Barnes is leaving his post to focus on the work of Four Rivers, a new theater company dedicated to serving audiences and artists in the South East region.

Mr Barnes oversaw the extensive renovation and restoration of the Theater Royal between 2007 and 2013 and was appointed Ambassador of the City of Waterford in recognition of this.

Theater Royal Board Chair Anne Marie Culfield said he had made “a very significant contribution” to the theater during his tenure.

She said: “Ben made a very important contribution to the Theater Royal during his tenure as artistic director. The role that [he] performed in the astonishing renovation of the iconic Theater Royal building and the many productions he brought to the Theater Royal stage, many of which received international acclaim, were important in enhancing the cultural life of the city of Waterford and the South East region. ”

In addition to directing productions for the Theater Royal, including the late Eric Sweeney’s new opera “The Invader”, Mr. Barnes has also designed the popular Shakespeare Review for area schools.

He will officially leave the post on March 31, 2022.
